There was no point leaving early this morning as our first stop, Michelham Priory which was a little under half-an-hour away from the hotel, did not open to 10.30am. So we left the hotel at about 10.00am and enjoyed the short trip to Michelham. It would have been worth the visit had it taken 3 times longer to get there. We were fortunate to have the services of Mr. David Cuttell as our guide and, whilst a tour on our own would have been very worthwhile, David's guidance made it truly memorable. For most of us it was the highlight of the trip.

We left Michelham at about 12.30pm so that we would get to Lewes in time to have lunch there. @@@

Reference Description
E18M3A The weather was not great but it was nothing like bad enough to spoil a stroll around the outside of the house.
E18M3B More pictures to come on the inside of the house. This one shows the spit in the kitchen which was operated by weights. We were advised that the measures of stones and pounds probably came from this type of apparatus.
E18M3C One of the benefits of being taken around by a guide was to have things pointed out that one would miss if walking around without someone who knew the place well. As the priory had evolved over many years in several stages, there were many secret tunnels and hidden passages. Here is a secret panel. Apparently, children used to climb down inside and frighten people as they walked up/down the stairs!
E18M3D Most of us grabbed something to eat soon after we got to Lewes. Quite a few of us had that in 'The Needlemakers' which Peter had suggested after finding rave reviews of the place. That was 'quite nice', a little underwhelming perhaps, as was the 'Flea Market'.
E18M3E Not knowing Lewes beforehand, Peter had warned people that the Castle would probably have too many steps for most people. In fact, it was not too bad, made easier by the fact that worn steps had been replaced by ones that were cleancut and easy to use. Here are some views from the top.
